The city was founded in the 13th century, joined the "Hanse" in 1283, and throughout the centuries grew to become an important seaport. First used for trade and later, from mid-nineteenth century on, as a naval base, Kiel is now known as the "Sailing City". It was host to the sailing competitions of the Olympic Summer Games 1972 and final harbour of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2002. Once a year the "Kiel Week" - the world's biggest Sailing Event - attracts people from all over the world to enjoy sailing, free concerts and more.
For the rest of the year, Kiel is "just" a city by the sea with beaches, fresh air and lots more to enjoy!
