Schleswig Holstein - Germany's only "Bundesland" to border both the North and the Baltic Sea. North of Schleswig-Holstein is Denmark and in the South, there is the rest of Germany. And between those four borders you will find one of the most interesting landscapes in Germany.
The area was shaped during the last ice age that ended about 10.000 years ago. So, take a boat trip on the Kiel Fjord, hire a bike and cycle across the soft hills shaped by glaciers, or go for a swim in one of the lakes that were washed out by them.
In Schleswig-Holstein, you don't have to visit a museum to experience history. When cycling, walking, inline-skating or canoeing, you can visit old churches, manor-houses or even come across prehistoric sites. The historic viking settlement of Haithabu can be visited during a day trip from Kiel.
